Mel Nicholson
General Manager, Mississippi Division
Mel Nicholson comes from an extensive dairy upbringing. He spent his childhood on his family's 125-cow registered Holstein dairy in Newton, Mississippi where he learned all aspects of the operation. His agricultural experience was enhanced with numerous 4-H projects throughout high school. Upon graduation, he enrolled at Mississippi State University where he earned his BS in Dairy Science in 1979. After reception of his degree, he took a position as the Assistant Manager of the Mississippi State Research Farm and was later promoted to Manager. In 1984, Mel completed his Masters Degree in Dairy Herd Nutrition and Management.
Later that year, Mel took a management position at a 400-cow commercial herd in Decatur, MS where he remained for one year. He then re-located to Georgia and took a position with Ration Maker Products where he employed and further developed his nutrition skills. In 1986, Mel bought a 135-cow farm which he owned and managed for nine years. In the fall of 1995, Mel was offered a position as a Nutrition Management Consultant with Dairy Management Systems, owned by Don Shumaker. For the next nine years, Mel traveled the area consulting with dairy farmers on their nutritional program and developing successful nutritional solutions to everyday dairy challenges. In 2004, Aurora Dairy bought their Mississippi location and was in need of a skilled and experienced General Manager to take over. Through his longtime friendship with Don Shumaker and David Sumrall, and his lifelong dairy experience he was offered and accepted the position of General Manager. DPS purchased the Mississippi location in July, 2005 at which time Mel retained his position.
Mel lives in Clinton, Mississippi with his wife June and her three children. Mel has three grown children and one grandchild.
